8 Tips for a Cleaner, Happier Vehicle

Taking pride in your car’s appearance doesn’t qualify as vanity, it’s smart vehicle ownership. You wouldn’t let your children go three months without washing their bodies so why would you neglect your vehicle?

Paint softens in the heat so if you’re doing a deep clean with a high-pressure hose or with a mitt on your driveway in the middle of the afternoon, you’re actually driving dirt into the paint. You’re much better off bringing it to Spiffy where it is cool, well equipped and out of the sun!

Spiffy Car Wash is a great place to bond with your vehicle and make your automotive investment go farther, last longer and look better. Here are 8 great cleaning and detailing hacks to make taking care of your vehicle easier and more effective.

1.   Don’t forget the hard to reach places

When wand washing your vehicle, make sure you reach all of the nooks and crannies! Use the Pre-Soak option at Spiffy to clean the wheel arches and under your vehicle to get rid of the salt and grime left from the winter months.

2.   Keep your headlights clear

Rinsing the headlights might get rid of the dirt but if you find they still seem a little hazy, use a standard glass cleaner applied with newspaper. Another more unconventional but an effective alternative is toothpaste! Arm & Hammer Advance White toothpaste works well but any kind will work just don’t use any with whitening agents or cool crystals (and don’t forget to floss).

3.   Keep the clearcoat, clearer

Preparing the surface of your vehicle is essential before applying a clearcoat. You can use a thin plastic bag as a glove and go over the surface of your car to amplify any bumps and imperfections that need to be addressed before applying the product.

4.   Harness static electricity

To remove stubborn pet hair from your vehicles carpets, put on a pair of latex gloves and then rub your hand over the carpet. The static electricity caused by the latex glove will help bring the pet hair up to the surface of the carpet for easy removal by hand or with a rubberized hand brush.

5.   Correct, carpet care

Stir up the dirt from your carpet by using a stiff bristle nylon brush to make it easier to extract with the vacuum and then spray with non-foaming carpet cleaner. To avoid soap or water stains, always let your upholstery fully dry before driving.

6.   Skip the dashboard streaks

There’s no shortage of generic car cleaning products, but make sure they are meant to protect your dashboard, not just make it look shiny. If you have a leather dashboard, we recommend using leather cleaner. Baby wipes can also work if you’re in a pinch.

7.   Fresh air, don’t care

Use Q-tips dipped in multipurpose cleaner to clean out your vents. Ensure you’ve chosen a cleaner with a scent you enjoy because the scent will be recirculated once you turn on the air circulation!

8.   Always read the directions

You can bring whatever detailing products you want to Spiffy but remember a good, thorough cleaning and detailing is 90% application and 10% product. You can get decent results with decent products, but incorrect application will get you mediocre results, even with great products.

What you should bring to Spiffy:

  1. Stiff bristle nylon brush
  2. Leather cleaner or baby wipes
  3. Latex gloves
  4. Q-tips
  5. Non-foaming carpet cleaner
